The amount of space the scanner takes up when you place it on a surface is 24inches wide x 15inches deep x 5inches high. It is large. I have used the scanner to capture and transfer images off of 12x12 cardstock and store them onto my computer. It does great. Also, the lid hinge actually lifts right up and can slide right back down to accomodate books. (One tip on setting up: Do read and follow the directions so everything goes right.
