It does shred, but has major problems with overheating too quickly, which automatically shuts the machine down for at least 5 minutes.The second, more serious problem, is that it jams quite often because there are too many strips of paper left between the teeth. Reversing for a few seconds as suggested in the manual serves to worsen the problem, because it forces these strips back into the very narrow paper slot. Today I opened up the thing because it would neither shred nor reverse, due to junk between the blades and lumps of compressed paper between the housing of the cutting mechanism and the intake slot. It requires taking out 6 screws and lifting the lid off. Inside, there was a switching mechanism that fell out, and a power transformer connected to gears that drive the blades. With that said, this shredder is small enough to put on top of my desk. I put it right next to my envelope basket and insert medium width envelopes directly. It's great for post card advertisements with your address on it. For the thicker envelopes, I rip the envelope in half and pull out my address info and only shread that. I lift the top off and deposit the unshreaded part of the envelope in the basket.I have my old shredder which has a faulty switch but is a power house... If I have to shread a million things than I use that. THIS SHREADER IS TOO SMALL FOR LARGE JOBS! Its butter served shredding as new mail comes in. It has auto start and auto off. It has a switch lock and separate master switch. It has also has reverse. At most, I've had about 25 pages to shred over a five minute time span. The store that I visited had a large selection of shredders; I looked at the features and wasn't sure how to make a selection. I was lucky enough to find a salesman (from the stores computer department) who was willing to test the shredders with me. After dismissing a couple of other units, we tried the P-35c.
